Dr Devendra Janardhan Makesar is a senior psychiatrist with more than three decades of clinical experience and an extensive international career across India, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Based in Riverton, Perth, Western Australia, he holds full registration with both the General Medical Council (UK) and the Medical Board of Australia, including specialist registration in Psychiatry.
He completed his MBBS in October 1990 and earned his MD in December 1995. His commitment to ongoing professional development is reflected in a series of postgraduate qualifications: a Diploma in Psychological Medicine (2001), MRCPsych, a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychological Medicine (2003), and an MA in Healthcare Law & Ethics (2012). In March 2019, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP), further recognising his specialist expertise.
Since October 2016, Dr Makesar has served as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Psychiatry at St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals in Perth. From 2014 to 2015, he held an honorary consultant position in Alcohol and Substance Misuse services. Between 2009 and 2015, he served as a Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist with Hywel Dda NHS Trust and University Health Board, contributing to general adult services and multidisciplinary mental health teams.
Dr Makesar has also held consultant roles in Old Age Psychiatry with Shaw Healthcare at Crofters Lodge, as well as earlier consultant posts in General Psychiatry with Powys Local Health Board. His specialist career began in 2007 with Hywel Dda NHS Trust and University Health Board, marking the start of a long and impactful tenure within the UK’s National Health Service. Collectively, these roles demonstrate his adaptability, clinical leadership, and depth of expertise across adult, older adult, crisis, forensic, and substance misuse psychiatry.
